Description
Among
the
most
prominent
citizens
of
early
Shelby
County
were
three
brothers
,
Samuel
,
John
and
Washington
Bond
.
Samuel
,
born
in
1804
,
was
a
practicing
physician
.
During
the
late
1840s
or
early
1850s
,
he
and
his
wife
,
Mary
Lucy
,
built
a
splendid
home
called
“The
Avenue”
in
what
is
now
the
Ellendale
section
of
Shelby
County
.
The
home
,
now
called
“Cedar
Hall”
for
the
trees
lining
the
drive
,
still
stands
,
and
has
been
restored
to
appear
much
as
it
did
when
it
was
the
residence
of
Samuel
Bond
.
Samuel’s
granddaughter
,
Kate
Bond
,
who
died
in
1974
at
age
88
,
was
a
prominent
member
of
the
Bartlett
community
.
The
“Flower
Lady,”
as
Kate
was
known
,
was
an
avid
gardener
and
supplied
many
of
the
hotels
in
Memphis
,
including
the
Peabody
,
with
flowers
.
--
John
Bond
,
born
in
1808
,
earned
his
Ph.D
.
and
became
a
respected
educator
and
farmer
.
Washington
Bond
,
who
was
born
in
1814
,
served
a
year
in
the
state
legislature
,
practiced
medicine
and
was
a
partner
in
the
Bond
and
Odell
Dry
Goods
store
.
Washington
was
also
a
successful
farmer
,
and
went
on
to
win
a
medal
for
cotton
at
the
London
Crystal
Palace
Exhibition
in
1851
.
--
The
Bond
family
helped
found
and
donated
the
land
for
Green
Bottom
Church
,
which
was
later
renamed
Morning
Sun
Cumberland
Presbyterian
Church
.
They
also
played
a
large
role
in
bringing
the
first
railroad
to
Shelby
County
.
The
Memphis
&
Ohio
Railroad
stretched
from
Memphis
to
Paris
and
the
depot
was
named
Bond’s
Station
.
The
Louisville
&
Nashville
,
or
L&N
Railroad
,
bought
the
Memphis
&
Ohio
Railroad
and
sponsored
a
contest
to
rename
the
community
.
The
railroad
chose
“Ellendale”
–
a
play-on-words
of
the
abbreviation
L&N
–
as
the
winning
entry
.
The
Bond
Family
Collection
includes
correspondence
,
business
and
legal
records
and
photographs
.
The
papers
provide
insight
into
the
issues
and
the
difficulties
encountered
by
farmers
,
store
keepers
and
physicians
of
the
time
.
Slaves
of
the
Bond
family
were
freed
before
the
Civil
War
,
but
stayed
on
to
work
the
land
.
Names
of
a
number
of
the
family’s
field
hands
appear
in
the
collection
.

The
papers
cover
up
to
the
early
20th
century
and
include
the
William
Sidney
Bond
scrapbook
.
William
Sidney
was
a
popular
Southern
author
of
the
20th
century
,
and
his
scrapbook
contains
reviews
,
biographical
notes
,
newspaper
clippings
and
photographs
.
Also
included
in
the
collection
are
small
photographs
and
other
information
on
Kate
Bond
,
the
“Flower
Lady.”

The
Bond
papers
supplement
the
information
found
in
other
family
collections
in
the
Memphis
and
Shelby
County
Room
such
as
the
Connor
,
Gilbert
and
Farrow
collections
and
particularly
The
Ida
Cooper
Collection
,
which
contains
biographical
information
on
the
Bond
family
.
Also
of
interest
is
the
daybook
of
Washington
Bond
.
The
daybook
,
which
covers
the
years
1837
to
1847
,
and
lists
patient
names
and
the
medicines
he
prescribed
,
provides
a
detailed
record
of
medical
treatment
in
the
early
19th
century
.
The
manuscript
has
been
transcribed
,
abstracted
and
indexed
by
Mary
Louise
Nazor
and
cataloged
separately
in
the
Memphis
and
Shelby
County
Room
.
